O tym produkcie

Inspiracja do projektu jego lamp pochodzi z wizyty w japońskiej wiosce rybackiej Gifu, gdzie obserwował pracujących rybaków. Nie używają oni tylko wytresowanych kormoranów do polowań, ale także latarek, które przyciągają ryby. Te tradycyjne latarnie miały żebra wykonane z bambusa, które były pokryte cienkim papierem.

Wykorzystał projekt tych tradycyjnych latatern, aby stworzyć własne światłowniki rzeźbiarskie z drewna i papieru. W przypadku Lampy Podłogowej Akari projektant używa papieru z drzewa morwowego, ponieważ rozpuszcza światło, czyniąc je łagodnym i rozprzestrzeniającym się równomiernie.

Every shade is made from the inner bark of the white mulberry tree — cooked, beaten, formed and dried entirely by hand, then fitted to its frame by our artisans. Switched off, it is a quiet sculpture of natural fiber. Switched on, a single bulb becomes a soft, even, warm glow.

The Material

Born from the bark of the white mulberry

White mulberry paper is made from the bast of the mulberry tree — the pale layer of fiber just beneath the outer bark. Its fibers are long, strong and faintly translucent, which is why it has been prized for centuries for lanterns, screens and calligraphy paper.

Mulberry branches grow back after every harvest, making the bark a naturally renewable material. We keep our process close to tradition. Rather than chasing a "perfect" sheet, we let each one keep the small marks of handwork — gentle shifts in thickness, the flow of the fibers, the occasional fleck of bark.

The longer the fiber, the stronger the paper — and the more evenly light is scattered as it passes through. That is what makes mulberry paper so right for lighting.

The Craft

Six stages to make a single sheet

From a mulberry branch to a finished shade, every step takes time, patience and experience. Slowness is the heart of this craft — and the reason no two lamps in this series are quite the same.

Harvesting and peeling mulberry branches

Harvest & peel

Branches are pruned in the cold season, softened by steaming and peeled by hand. The dark outer skin is scraped away, leaving only the pale inner bark.

Cook & rinse

The bark simmers slowly in a mild alkaline bath until soft, then is rinsed again and again in clean water to wash away starch and impurities.

Pick by hand

Artisans work through the wet fiber strand by strand, removing knots and specks. It is the slowest step — and it decides how clean and even the sheet will be.

Wooden mallets beat the fiber into a fine pulp while keeping each strand long — that is where the paper's strength comes from.

Form the sheet

The papermaker dips a fine screen into the vat, rocks it gently and lifts it out, letting the fibers lock together into a thin, even sheet.

Sheets are brushed onto boards to dry naturally, then fitted by hand to each frame — smoothed and trimmed by eye and touch alone.

Glass and plastic let light pass straight through. Mulberry paper catches it in thousands of crossing fibers and releases it gently — like sunlight through a paper window.

Setup

Four steps to light it up

Unbox & check

Remove the shade and accessories and check them against the packing list. Hold the shade by its frame and avoid pressing on the paper.

Assemble

Connect and secure the [frame / base / cord] following the instructions. [Describe how to open the shade, if needed.]

Fit the bulb

Screw in an [E26 / E27] warm-white LED bulb and make sure it stays clear of the paper.

Switch on

Plug-in models are ready to use once connected. Hardwired models should be installed by a licensed electrician.

Safety note: Use LED bulbs only, with a wattage no higher than the rating marked on the socket or product label. LEDs run cool and suit paper shades — avoid hotter incandescent or halogen bulbs. For indoor, dry locations only.

Caring for paper

i.Dust with a soft brush, or a hair dryer on the cool setting.
ii.Don't wipe with a damp cloth; keep away from moisture, steam and outdoor use.
iii.Use LED bulbs only, and keep the bulb from touching the paper.
iv.Avoid sharp objects, and support the frame when moving the lamp.
v.Over time the natural fibers may mellow to a warmer tone — a patina all its own.

FAQ

Good to know

Are paper shades safe? Do they get hot?

Use LED bulbs, which produce little heat and suit paper shades, and keep the bulb from touching the paper. This product is ETL / CE / CCC certified.

Are the specks and uneven thickness defects?

No. Small flecks of bark, fiber clusters and slight variations in thickness are natural features of handmade paper — and the reason every lamp is one of a kind.

Can I clean it with a damp cloth?

We don't recommend it. Moisture can wrinkle the paper or leave marks. A soft brush or a hair dryer on the cool setting is all it needs.

Will the paper turn yellow over time?

With long exposure to light, the natural fibers may slowly take on a warmer tone. It's a normal change in natural materials — and many people love the character it adds.

Is it dimmable?
