Is alabaster porous and does that affect how it works as a lamp shade?
Alabaster is a naturally porous, fine-grained stone, and that porosity is actually what makes it so prized for lamp shades. Light passes through the stone's crystalline structure, producing a warm, diffused, ambient glow rather than harsh direct light. The thicker the alabaster, the softer and more sculptural the effect. Mooie Home's alabaster collection uses genuine natural stone across a range of fixtures, including the Ebell Alabaster Semi-Flush Mount with its thick solid stone drum, the Shadow Ring Alabaster Wall Sconce, and the Aureon Alabaster Round Flush Mount.

The Theodore Alabaster Chandelier features sweeping brass arms with spherical stone shades, while the Ebell Alabaster Semi-Flush Mount showcases a solid stone drum on a minimalist stem. For wall lighting, the Pebble Alabaster Wall Light is crafted from solid brass and natural alabaster with a warm, diffused glow perfect for any interior.

How do I identify real alabaster in a light fixture or lamp?
Genuine alabaster is a soft, fine-grained natural stone that glows warmly and unevenly when lit from within, revealing subtle veining, cloudiness, and tonal variation — no two pieces look identical. Faux alabaster (usually resin or glass) tends to glow more uniformly and feels lighter. Real stone is also cool to the touch and slightly translucent when held to light. Mooie Home's alabaster collection features fixtures made from genuine natural stone, including the Ebell Alabaster Semi-Flush Mount, described as a thick solid drum of genuine stone, and the Aureon Alabaster Round Flush Mount, which highlights raw organic beauty of genuine natural stone.
