About this piece

Balancing English country charm with tailored atelier craftsmanship, the Charlbury Semi-Flush Mount Ceiling Lamp layers tactile folk warmth with classic architectural poise. Anchored by a domed brass canopy, a slender metal stem threads through a sculpted stack of turned solid wood beads before suspending a hand-pleated fabric drum shade finished with undulating scalloped rims and contrasting rickrack trim. Diffusing interior light into a soft, glare-free 360-degree ambient glow while gently washing the ceiling plane, this scalloped pleated ceiling light functions as a whimsical wood bead brass semi flush mount and an exquisite pleated fabric drum shade ceiling lamp.

Fabric Lighting Collection

Light, softened
by cloth.

Mooiehome specializes in fabric lighting. Every shade is wrapped and finished by hand, and the fabric spreads the bulb’s light into a warm, even glow with no harsh glare.

Why choose a fabric shade

A bare bulb throws hard light from a single bright point. A fabric shade turns the whole shade into the light source, which is easier on the eyes and kinder to faces, walls and wood.

Even light, no glare

The weave spreads light across the entire shade, so you won’t be dazzled when you look up from the sofa or the dinner table.

A warmer glow

Natural-toned fabrics add a touch of warmth as light passes through. Even a neutral bulb starts to feel like evening light.

Made by hand

Every shade is laminated, rolled and edge-finished by hand, then switched on and checked before it leaves us.

Works with standard bulbs

Fits common screw-base bulbs. A warm-white LED gives the softest light and keeps the shade cool.

Four fabrics, four kinds of glow

Each fabric lets light through in its own way. Choose by the mood you want with the lamp on, and by the texture you’ll see in daylight with it off.

Close-up of natural linen fabric
01

Natural linen

Natural slubs in the weave give a warm, gently mottled glow. Ideal for living and dining rooms.

Close-up of white cotton fabric
02

White cotton

A tight, even weave and the brightest, most neutral light of the four. Great for kitchens and work areas.

Close-up of crinkled fabric
03

Crinkled fabric

Fine folds break the light into soft vertical bands, so the shade still has texture when it’s off.

Close-up of charcoal linen fabric
04

Charcoal linen

Little light escapes through the sides, so it pools above and below instead. A dramatic choice for accent lighting.

Same bulb, same room, different light

A bare bulb glares and casts hard-edged shadows. Wrap it in fabric, and the same bulb spreads soft, even light over the table and everyone around it.

Drag the handle left and right. On the left, a bare bulb: glaring, with hard shadows. On the right, a fabric shade: wide, soft light and gentle shadows.

Why fabric, and not another material?

Every shade material has its strengths. If you want light that feels soft and warm, fabric is the surest choice.

How every shade is made

Six steps take a roll of fabric to a finished shade, most of them done by hand. Every shade is switched on and checked before it ships.

  1. An inspector checks fabric on a light table
    1

    Fabric inspection

Each roll is unrolled over a light table to catch flaws, thin spots and color variation before cutting. Every order uses fabric from a single dye lot.

  2. A craftsman cuts a shade panel from a paper pattern
    2

    Pattern cutting

Panels are cut along the grain, so the weave runs perfectly straight all the way around the finished shade.

  3. Fabric and liner feeding through the laminating rollers
    3

    Laminating

The fabric is bonded to a flame-retardant liner that keeps the shade taut for years and spreads light more evenly.

  4. A craftsman fits the steel ring into the shade edge
    4

    Ring rolling

Steel rings are rolled into the top and bottom edges, with the seam placed at the back of the shade.

  5. Close-up of hand finishing at the rim
    5

    Hand finishing

Raw edges are folded over the rings and tucked by hand, so no liner or glue shows at the top or bottom.

  6. An inspector checks a row of lit, finished shades
    6

    Light-tested, one by one

Every shade is switched on before packing and checked for seam shadows, glue marks and uneven glow. Any that fall short are remade.

Choosing fabric lighting, room by room

Fabric lamps bring soft, atmospheric light, and each room calls for a slightly different choice.

A fabric floor lamp glowing beside the living room sofa

Living room

Place a floor lamp beside the sofa or in a reading corner as a secondary light. In the evening, switch on just this one and the room comes alive.

Bedroom

A lamp on each nightstand gives soft, glare-free light for bedtime reading, and won’t jolt you awake at night.

Try: a matching pair of table lamps, warm white

Two fabric pendants lit above a dining table

Dining room

Hang a pendant right above the table so the light falls on the food and the faces around it. Long tables suit two or three in a row.

Try: pendants in linen or cotton

Study

Set a table lamp beside the desk. White cotton lets the most light through, bright enough for reading and writing without glare.

One light isn’t enough. Layer it.

Designers plan lighting in three layers, and fabric lamps have a place in every one.

Three layers of lighting in a living room: main, functional and ambientClick to enlarge
  1. 1

    Main lighting

Lights the whole room, usually from a pendant or ceiling fixture. A fabric pendant over the dining table does both jobs: it lights the space and sets the mood.

  2. 2

    Functional lighting

Focused light for reading, getting ready and working. Bedside lamps and desk lamps belong here.

  3. 3

    Ambient lighting

Soft light that adds depth. Turn off the overhead light, leave on just the floor lamp by the sofa or a small lamp in the corner, and the whole home settles down.

Choosing a bulb color

Put a different bulb in the same fabric lamp and the whole mood changes.

Extra warm

Like candlelight or a sunset, and the most relaxing. Perfect for bedrooms and quiet evenings in the living room.

Warm white

Warm without turning yellow, and shows off fabric at its best. Works in living rooms, dining rooms and bedrooms.

Natural white

Bright and crisp, close to daylight. Best for desks and work areas where you need to see detail.

Tip: stick to one bulb color per room for a more cohesive look.

Six shapes, six ways to light a room

A shade’s shape decides where the light goes. Here are the six most common fabric shade shapes, and where each one works best.

Drum linen lampshade

Drum

The same width top and bottom, with clean lines. Light spreads evenly up and down, at home in modern and Scandinavian rooms.

Common on: pendants, floor lamps

Tapered linen lampshade

Tapered

The classic narrow-top, wide-bottom shape. More light falls downward, keeping the surface below bright for reading.

Common on: table lamps, bedside lamps

Bell linen lampshade

Bell

A softly flared hem and graceful curves with a hint of vintage. Lovely in bedrooms and entryways.

Common on: table lamps, wall lights

Pleated linen lampshade

Pleated

Fabric is hand-pressed into fine pleats for rich light and shadow. A favorite in French and soft, cream-toned interiors.

Common on: table lamps, pendants

Square linen lampshade

Square

Crisp lines and clean corners that sit well with modern Chinese and minimalist furniture.

Common on: table lamps, floor lamps

Scalloped linen lampshade

Scalloped

A wavy scalloped hem, playful yet refined, that adds a soft decorative touch.

Common on: table lamps, wall lights

Easy to care for, ready to install

Everyday care

  • Switch off and let the bulb cool completely before cleaning.
  • Dust weekly with a lint roller or a soft brush.
  • For a deeper clean, vacuum on low with a brush attachment.
  • Spot clean with a barely damp cloth. Don’t soak or machine wash; water can loosen the liner.
  • Use LED bulbs. They run cool, so light fabrics keep their true color.

What’s in the box

  • Fabric shade (with fitter)
  • Ceiling canopy or lamp base (depending on model)
  • Cord and socket
  • Mounting hardware (pendants)
  • Illustrated instructions
Everything in the box, laid out flat

FAQ

Do fabric shades collect dust?

About as much as other upholstered furniture. A quick pass with a lint roller or soft brush each week keeps them clean.

Can I wash the shade?

We don’t recommend washing the whole shade or putting it in a machine, since water can loosen the liner and warp the shape. Spot clean with a barely damp cloth instead.

Do fabric shades get hot?

The inner liner is flame-retardant. With an LED bulb, heat output is very low; even after hours on, the shade only feels slightly warm.

Will light-colored shades turn yellow over time?

Heat and long exposure to direct sun are the main causes. Use LED bulbs and keep the shade out of strong sunlight, and it will hold its original color.

Which bulb color looks best?

Warm white. Light passing through fabric becomes even warmer and softer. For desks and reading spots, a more neutral daylight bulb works well.

Is it dimmable?

Some models are dimmable with a dimmable LED bulb and a compatible dimmer switch. Please check each product’s details.
