Is it because you don’t understand the installation of lamps? When you encounter the lamp you like, you want to buy it but you are afraid that you won’t be able to install it. You are in a dilemma?

Don’t worry, DIY is actually not as difficult as you think. Today’s blog post will teach you how to install lamps at home. Hopefully it will be a resource you can refer to so you have the knowledge, skills, supplies, and confidence to try this DIY.

While it's technically known how to do it, every situation is different. You never know what you'll find when you remove an old unit. What wires would be there? Are there any weird old electrical parts? As you'll soon read, this light fixture replacement is easy and can be done in less than an hour.

How to install light fixtures

1. Preparation tools:

Replacement light fixtures, screwdrivers and drills, wire cutters, electrical tape, wire nuts, ladders, etc.

You won't need many supplies for this project, and your new light fixture will likely come with all the hardware you need to get the job done (even the wire nuts).

2. Turn off the power

This is the most important step. Go to the breaker box and make sure the power is turned off to the room. Then, return to the room and turn on all the switches to make sure no lights are on. You can also take a voltage tester and connect it to any outlet in the room to double check.

3,Remove the old device and take photos

Every fixture is different, this one just screws to a mounting plate on the ceiling. Take a screwdriver and unscrew the old fixture from the ceiling.

Be sure to keep your phone in your pocket as you will need to take a photo of the wiring before removing anything. If you're struggling to get power on a new light source, it's handy to have the original photo as a reference. It always helps to see which wires are connected together!

Connect a copper wire to the ground nut on the mounting plate, connect the white neutral wires together, and then connect a black wire to the yellow live wire.

Before touching anything, grab the voltage tester again and touch it to the wires and inside the box. No electricity!

Next, the wire nuts were removed and the wires were unplugged from the old light fixture. It's officially gone!

4. Check your new device

Every fixture is different and your fixture may come with instructions that need to be followed. Please read these carefully. This has a long black wire with black (hot), white (neutral) and green (ground) wires.

You will need a little "slack" at the end of each wire as you connect it to the new wire. Take your wire cutters and remove some of the coating from the ends of the wires. To do this, simply cut the coating (but don't cut all the way to the wire), then squeeze the wire cutters together and slide the coating down and off.

Leave at least an inch or so at the ends so the job is much easier when it comes to reaching the ceiling with the new lights.

The original black wire (which holds all three wires) is long and thick, making it difficult to press it into the ceiling when attaching the fixtures. It ended up being cut shorter (as seen in the photo above) so there wasn't as much space on the ceiling to put. You can cut the wires to suit your situation.

5.Pick up your items and climb up the ladder

Well, if you're doing this yourself, things can get a little tricky. Essentially, you have to hold the light fixture while using your other hand to connect all the wires together. Oh, and electrical tape, nuts, and screwdrivers. In this case, you can recruit friends or partners to help, and now is the time to do so! Having someone hold the fixture while you make the connections will probably go a lot faster.

6. Install the mounting plate

Every fixture is different, but in some cases you can screw the mounting plate into the ceiling (so it snaps in a bit, but not completely) and simply attach the fixture to it while you connect the wires .

7. Connect your wires

Connect the green wire to the green ground screw, the white wires together, and the black wire to the hot yellow wire. Here are some tips…

• 1. First cut off the electrical tape. It’s best to have everything ready and nearby. Cut the electrical tape and place it on the ladder so you can grab it quickly without fumbling.
• 2. Make sure the wire is actually connected (wrapped tightly), then screw on the wire nut. Once it's installed, you can add electrical tape over it to make sure the wires don't move around.
• 3. Once all the wires are connected, gently push them back into the box so they are out of the way.

8. Screw on your fixtures

Make sure there is no movement when screwing it into the ceiling. After the fixture was installed, a light bulb was added and the shade screwed on.

9. Turn on the power

Turn the power on and off during the project. After connecting the power, make sure everything is working properly. If not, delete and troubleshoot. This usually means your connections are incorrect or things got messed up and the wires got disconnected.

The basic installation steps of lighting fixtures are like this, most of them are universal. Some larger projects should be left to professionals.
