It happens at least once a month on high-end residential jobs. A homeowner or junior designer falls in love with a stunning, micro-veined stone light fixture online. They order it, wait twelve weeks for custom fabrication, and hire an electrician to mount it over a dining table.

They flip the wall switch — expecting a warm, atmospheric ambient wash — and instead, the stone stays dark, dense, and opaque, casting harsh spotlight shadows down onto the table.

They bought solid marble when what they actually needed was carved alabaster.

In showroom displays under blinding overhead track lights, alabaster and marble look like twin cousins. Both are natural stones carved from deep earth deposits. Both feature mesmerizing organic veining. Both signal uncompromising luxury. But the moment you wire them into a circuit, they behave like completely different physical elements.

The 3-Second "Flashlight Test"

Before diving into geological science, here is the golden rule every studio designer uses. Take your smartphone flashlight and press it flush against the back of the stone sample.

If the stone absorbs and redistributes the light into a warm, volumetric halo, you are holding alabaster.

If the light bounces off the surface or stays trapped in a tiny point, you are holding marble.

Alabaster: Geology's Natural Diffuser

To understand alabaster, you have to understand why master glassblowers and lighting artisans revere it. Geologically, historical European alabaster is a fine-grained, massive variety of gypsum (hydrated calcium sulfate). Because its crystalline matrix is remarkably tight yet chemically porous, light rays don't merely bounce off its exterior — they pass into the body of the stone, scattering internally before exiting.

When unlit, high-grade alabaster possesses a soft, buttery, satin finish reminiscent of fine parchment or cold cream. When lit from within, it transforms into an active light source.

Marble: The Sculptural Anchor

Where alabaster is luminous and delicate, marble is dense, structural, and visually commanding. Marble is a metamorphic rock formed when limestone undergoes intense heat and pressure deep within the Earth's crust, recrystallizing calcite into a dense, interlocking mineral web.

Because of its density (Mohs hardness 3–4), marble is largely opaque. Unless sliced down to ultra-thin micro-veneers — which require fiberglass backing and sky-high budgets — marble will not allow light to pass through its core.

If you are specifying heavy natural-stone fixtures, keep these practical notes handy for your electrical team.

Trap 01

The over-torqued set screw

Because alabaster is so soft, well-meaning electricians with power drivers frequently crack shades by over-tightening the brass retaining-collar screws.

The fix → Insist on hand-tightening hardware onto alabaster fixtures, and verify your manufacturer includes rubber or silicone grommets between metal and stone.
Trap 02

Weight ratings & canopy support

A solid carved marble pendant can easily exceed 35 pounds. Standard residential plastic boxes are rated to 50 pounds total, but code best practice avoids near-capacity loads on plastic.

The fix → Have your contractor mount a metal fan-rated J-box into the ceiling joists before hanging the fixture — our round brass canopy then covers it flush, so the support is structural but the finished ceiling stays clean.

Maintenance & Preservation

Natural stone is an investment that requires specific care protocols — especially when paired with warm electrical components.

Preserving Alabaster

  • Zero water rule. Never use wet sponges or spray cleaners — water penetrates the gypsum matrix and causes chalking.
  • Dry dusting only. Use a dry microfiber cloth or low-pressure compressed air for crevices.
  • Annual wax. A thin coat of clear microcrystalline museum wax seals the porous surface against dust and finger oils.

Preserving Marble

  • pH-neutral cleaners. Use dedicated stone sprays. Avoid vinegar, bleach, or descalers, which etch marble instantly.
  • Seal twice yearly. A penetrating sealer protects against dust deposition near warm LED drivers.
  • Mind acidity. Keep acidic sprays well away from the surface at all times.
