How to Rewire a Table Lamp

I inherited my Volos Dome with a cord so brittle it practically crunched. Chrome dome, walnut stem, the kind of lamp that runs north of $160 new — and everyone told me to bin it over a two-dollar length of wire. Reader, I did not bin it.

Rewiring a lamp looks like real electrical work. It is not. It's arts and crafts with a plug on the end. Here's the whole thing, start to glow.

Rule Zero

Keep it unplugged the entire time. Nothing here needs power until the very last step. I'm a hobbyist, not an electrician — if anything looks scorched or weird beyond the cord, tap out and see a pro.

Why Bother?

The math is almost rude: a rewiring kit is about ten bucks, a replacement is $160+. But it's not just money. That mirror-chrome shade and time-softened walnut can't be bought new at any price — you'd only get the shiny, hollow, twenty-dollar cousin. Also, a cracked cord is a genuine fire risk, so this is safety with a side of thrift.

Meet the Lamp

Here's the layout, and it's friendlier than it looks. Up top, the chrome dome lifts off once you loosen the little finial on its crown — that's how you reach the wiring connection hidden just beneath it, where a small screw terminal block joins everything together. The tapered walnut stem is hollow, with an internal channel the cord runs up, and the whole thing plants on a weighted chrome base where the cord enters through a side notch. That's the whole route: in at the base, up the stem, connect at the top.

One more thing worth knowing: this is a proper three-wire setup — live, neutral, and ground — so you'll be matching three conductors, not two. More on that when we get there.

One gentle nag: the walnut is the star, so work on a towel and keep your screwdriver from kissing the finish.

Open the Lamp

Start at the top. Loosen the finial — that little ball on the crown of the dome — and lift the chrome shade straight up and off. Underneath, right where the shade sat, you'll find the wiring connection: a small terminal block with the old wire's live, neutral, and ground screwed into it. That's your work site. Snap a photo now — which color sits in which terminal is the one thing you'll want to copy exactly later.

Remove the Old Wire

At the terminal block, loosen the screws holding the old wire's three conductors and free them. Then head to the base, unclip the cord from its strain relief, and draw the whole old cord down and out through the stem. Tie a bit of string to the top end before you pull it all the way through — leave the string threaded up the stem and you've got a built-in pull-cord for the new wire. (You'll thank yourself in about ninety seconds.)

Feed in the New Wire

Push the new cord in through the side notch in the base and guide it upward through the stem's internal channel until the end pokes out at the top by the terminal block. If you left that string in place, just tape the new cord to it and pull — the wire follows the string right up. Leave a few inches of slack sticking out the top so you've got room to work, and don't force anything: if it snags, back off and add a gentle twist.

Before you connect anything, get the three conductors ready: trim back the outer sheath, strip about ½ inch off each of the three wires, and give each a tidy twist. On a standard cord the colors are your map — brown is live, blue is neutral, and green-and-yellow is ground (in older US cords: black live, white neutral, green ground). Keep them straight and the rest is easy.

Connect the Wires

This is the heart of the job, and the terminal block makes it foolproof: each conductor gets its own screw. Slip the live into the terminal marked L, the neutral into N, and the ground into the earth terminal (the one marked with the little ground symbol). Push each stripped end fully in so no bare copper shows outside the block, then tighten each screw down firmly and give the wire a gentle tug to confirm it's held.

Match your photo from the start and you literally cannot get this wrong. Same colors, same terminals.

The One Rule

No bare copper poking out of the terminal block. A stray strand touching the metal body is how an all-metal lamp turns into a shock hazard. Fully seated, screwed tight, nothing hanging out.

Reassemble & Test

Almost there. Draw the slack back down through the base so the wire sits neat inside the stem, re-clip the strain relief at the base notch, then lower the chrome shade back over the top and tighten the finial to lock it on. Route the cord out through the base notch, plug in, and flip the switch.

If warm light pools under that chrome dome — congratulations, you're basically an electrician now (you're not, but enjoy it). If nothing happens, unplug straight away and run down the quick list below. Nine times out of ten it's something small.

Symptom Usual suspect
Dead silence, no light A conductor slipped its terminal, or a screw isn't tight. Reopen the top and re-seat all three.
Flickering drama Loose or poorly stripped wire in the block. Re-strip and re-tighten.
Breaker trips the moment you plug in Stop. A stray strand is bridging terminals. Unplug, open up, tidy the copper.
Chrome feels tingly to the touch Live and ground/neutral are mixed up. Unplug and check each color is in its right terminal.

Start on something you won't cry over, take your time on the wires, keep it unplugged till the end, and call a pro if it ever gets weird.
