How to Rewire
a Table Lamp

One tired cord, one afternoon, and an integrated-LED classic back in service. A true beginner's guide.

My Volos Dome came to me the way a lot of good lamps do — handed down, a little tired, and not quite working. It's a real piece: chrome dome polished to a mirror, a gorgeous tapered walnut stem worn smooth by decades of hands, the kind of lamp that runs north of $160 new and feels every dollar of it. The only problem was the cord: brittle, cloth-wrapped, and cracked right down to the copper, with a plug that sparked if you looked at it sideways.

A shop quote to rewire it would have cost more than the parts by a wide margin, and replacing a lamp of this caliber would run well over a hundred dollars. Instead I spent one Saturday afternoon and about eight bucks in parts bringing it back to life — and honestly, it was easier than assembling a piece of flat-pack furniture. If you've got a lamp worth keeping but the wiring's shot, don't retire it. Here's everything you need to know.

Why Bother Rewiring Instead of Replacing?

Here's the math that makes rewiring a no-brainer: a rewiring kit runs about ten dollars, while replacing a lamp like the Volos Dome means spending north of $160 on a new one — if you can even find the same piece again. But saving money is only half of it. A lamp like this was built with real materials — solid metal, actual wood — and it has a weight and a presence that the plasticky twenty-dollar stuff simply can't fake. Rewiring lets you keep the good bones and ditch the dangerous guts.

There's also the stuff you can't buy new at any price: the mirror finish on that chrome shade, the way the walnut has darkened and softened over the years, the fact that this specific lamp has been lighting somebody's evenings since long before you owned it. You're not just saving money. You're keeping a piece of something.

And — I can't stress this enough — a cord that's cracked, brittle, or sparking is a genuine fire risk. This isn't a project you're doing purely for looks. You're doing it so your house doesn't burn down.

Safety First — Yes, Really

Before you touch anything: unplug the lamp. Keep it unplugged the entire time you're working. There is no step in this process where the lamp needs power until you're completely finished and ready to test it.

If you open something up and find damage beyond the cord and its connection — scorched insulation deeper in the base, a burnt LED driver, wiring you don't recognize — there's no shame in taking it to a lamp repair shop. I'm a hobbyist, not an electrician, so treat this as a friendly walkthrough: when in doubt, check your local codes or call a pro.

Getting to Know the Volos Dome

Before we take anything apart, it helps to know what you're looking at. The Volos Dome is a beautiful example of how simple a table lamp really is under the surface — just a handful of parts threaded onto a hollow rod that runs up the middle. Here's the tour, top to bottom.

  • The chrome dome shade — the polished metal saucer up top, capped with a little finial knob. It lifts away to reveal the light module underneath.
  • The LED module — instead of a screw-in bulb, this lamp has a built-in LED board that lives just below the dome. Two lead wires come off it, and that's where the cord connects. There's no bulb to replace — the LED is the light.
  • The LED driver — a small transformer, usually tucked in the base, that converts wall voltage to the low voltage the LED runs on. Some models put it inline in the cord instead.
  • The walnut stem — the tapered wood column that gives this lamp its whole character. It's hollow, and the cord runs straight down through it.
  • The chrome base — the weighted metal dish that keeps it planted. The cord exits through a small notch at the back.
  • The center rod — the threaded tube running through the stem that everything else is built around, and the channel your new cord will travel.
Mind the Wood

The walnut stem is the soul of this lamp, so treat it gently. Rest the lamp on a soft towel while you work, keep your screwdriver away from the finish, and if the wood looks thirsty when you're done, a wipe of furniture wax brings the grain right back to life. Metal parts you can polish; the wood you protect.

What You'll Need

Here's your shopping list. Most hardware stores carry all of it, and much of it comes bundled in a single "lamp rewiring kit" for under ten dollars — usually the most economical way to start.

Take the Lamp Apart

Lay the Volos Dome down on your towel and start at the top. Unscrew the little finial knob on the crown of the dome, and the chrome shade lifts straight off, exposing the LED module underneath. Because this lamp uses an integrated LED, there's no bulb to unscrew — the light board is fixed in place, and you'll be leaving it right where it is.

Most of the work happens down in the base, so flip the lamp over. Undo the screws holding the base plate (they're usually hidden under a felt pad you can peel back at the edge) and lift the plate away. Inside you'll find where the cord connects to the LED's lead wires — either twisted together under wire nuts, joined at a small terminal block, or through a little plug-in connector. You'll likely also see the LED driver, the small boxy transformer that feeds the light. Take a quick photo before you disconnect anything, so you have a reference for how it all went together.

Disconnect the old cord from the LED leads: unscrew the wire nuts, loosen the terminal-block screws, or unclip the connector, whichever your lamp uses. Then find where the cord exits the back of the base, free it from any strain-relief clip, and gently pull the whole old cord out — it runs up through the hollow walnut stem, so a slow, steady tug draws it right out. Keep that old cord beside you; it's your reference for how long the new one needs to be.

Feed the New Cord Through

Thread your new cord through the same path the old one took. On this lamp the connection lives in the base, so feed the cut end in through the notch at the back of the base, up into the hollow walnut stem if your wiring runs that way, or simply across to where the LED leads wait — follow whatever route the old cord took. If it snags, back it out an inch and try again with a slight twist. Patience beats brute force every single time; forcing it can strip the outer insulation before you've even wired anything.

Leave yourself three or four inches of slack at the connection end. You need that room to strip and join the wires comfortably — you can always draw the excess back out through the base once everything's connected.

Prep the Wires

This is the part that trips up beginners, so slow down and enjoy it — it's oddly satisfying once it clicks.

Lamp cord is two wires joined down the middle. Find the groove between them, nick it with your utility knife, and gently pull the two halves apart for about two inches. Then set your wire strippers to the right gauge and remove roughly three-quarters of an inch of plastic from the end of each wire, exposing the bare copper. Twist the loose copper strands on each wire tightly clockwise so each becomes a single neat point — no frayed whiskers sticking out.

Telling hot from neutral

Here's the one detail that makes the whole thing safe: the two wires are different, and you have to tell them apart. Run your fingernail along the cord. One side is smooth; the other is ribbed with tiny ridges (sometimes it's the side with printing on it, or a slightly different color strand inside). That ribbed side is your neutral; the smooth side is your hot.

Since this lamp has no brass-and-silver screws — just two lead wires coming off the LED — the goal is to match your cord to those leads correctly. The LED's own wires are usually marked: often a solid color for hot and a white or striped wire for neutral, or a small + and printed on the board. Pair them up like for like:

The neutral is the grounded side, and keeping it consistent is what stops the lamp's metal parts from going live. On a lamp like the Volos Dome — all metal, where you're handling a chrome shade every time you reach for it — getting this pairing right is what keeps the whole thing safe to touch. If your LED's leads aren't marked at all, note that many low-voltage LED modules aren't polarity-sensitive on the mains side because the driver sorts it out; when in doubt, follow the wiring diagram that came with the lamp, or match exactly how the old cord was connected in your photo.

Tie the Underwriter's Knot

Don't let the fancy name scare you — it's just a simple knot, and it's the single most-skipped step by beginners. Its whole job is strain relief: if someone trips over the cord or yanks the plug, the knot takes the pull instead of your freshly-wired connections. Skip it and a hard tug can rip a wire right off its screw.

To tie it: make a loop with the left wire, make a loop with the right wire, then pass each wire's end through the other wire's loop and pull gently. It's like the very first move of tying your shoelaces, but both laces loop through each other. On this lamp, tie it just inside the base where the cord enters, so the knot sits behind the strain-relief clip — that way any pull on the cord lands on the knot and the base, never on your connections up the line.

See It First

A ten-second search for "underwriter's knot diagram" will show the two loops far better than any paragraph can. Watch it once and your hands will remember it. Practice on the scrap you cut off the old cord before you commit.

Connect the Cord to the LED

Now join your cord to the LED's lead wires, matching the pairs from the last step — hot to hot, neutral to neutral. How you join them depends on what your lamp uses:

  • Wire nuts: hold the two matching stripped ends side by side, slip the nut over both, and twist clockwise until it's snug and no bare copper shows below the cap. Give each wire a gentle tug to confirm it's held.
  • Terminal block: loosen the little screw, insert the stripped wire fully into the slot so no bare copper sticks out, and tighten the screw down firmly onto it.
  • Plug-in connector: if the leads meet at a keyed connector, just push the two halves together until they click.

Whichever method you use, the golden rule is the same: no bare copper left exposed. On an all-metal lamp like this, a stray strand touching the body is the classic cause of a dead short or a live shell. Tuck each join in neat and compact so it fits back inside the base, keeping the two connections from pressing against each other.

Reassemble the Lamp

Gently draw the excess cord back out through the notch in the base until the slack disappears and your connections sit tidily inside, then re-clip the strain relief so the cord can't be tugged loose. Tuck the joined wires and the driver back into the base cavity, making sure nothing is pinched and no join is pressed hard against the metal.

Set the base plate back on and drive its screws home, then smooth the felt pad back down over them. Up top, the LED module never moved, so all that's left is to lower the chrome dome back over it and thread the finial knob back on to lock it in place. Give the whole lamp a gentle shake — nothing should rattle, and the cord shouldn't budge when you tug it.

The Moment of Truth

With the LED built in, there's no bulb to add — just plug it in and flip the switch.

If that warm light spills out under the chrome dome — congratulations, you just did real electrical work with your own two hands. Stand there and admire it for a second; you earned that. If it doesn't light, don't panic and don't fiddle with it while it's plugged in. Unplug it immediately, then work through the quick checklist below. Nine times out of ten it's something small and obvious.

A Few Parting Thoughts

My Volos Dome sits on the console table by my front door now. It works perfectly, it's safe, and it cost me about eight dollars in parts to save a lamp worth well over a hundred and sixty. There's something deeply satisfying about repairing a thing with your own hands instead of hauling it to the curb and buying a plasticky replacement — a small, quiet rebellion against a throwaway world.

A little advice as you head off: start with a lamp you don't love too much, just in case your first knot is a mess. Take your sweet time on the wire prep, because that's where all the safety lives. Cradle the wood and chrome on a towel so you don't mar that finish. Keep it unplugged until the very last step. And if you ever feel out of your depth, there is zero shame in calling a pro.

But I've got a feeling that once you do this once, you'll never look at a tired old lamp the same way again. You'll spot a well-made one with a bad cord — at a shop, a sale, a relative's attic — flip it over to check the wiring, and think: yeah — I could bring that back.
