How to Replace
a Lamp Socket (every single type)
Because that flickering thrift-store lamp deserves a second life — and you deserve to not buy a new one.
So your lamp's been acting up. You wiggle the bulb, it flickers to life, then dies the second you let go. Maybe the switch spins forever without ever clicking. Maybe you plugged it in and got a little pop and a smell you'd rather forget. Nine times out of ten the culprit isn't the lamp, the cord, or the bulb — it's a worn-out socket. And here's the thing I wish somebody had told me back when I hauled a "broken" mid-century lamp to the curb: replacing a lamp socket is a fifteen-minute job that costs about four bucks.
I've swapped more sockets than I can count — on garage-sale finds, on my grandmother's brass floor lamp, on a hideous ceramic thing my wife swears is "vintage." This guide covers every type you're likely to run into. Let's save some lamps.

Not "turn it off." Unplug it. Pull the plug clean out of the wall and set it where you can see it the whole time you work. Electricity does not care how experienced you are, and a lamp socket carries line voltage — enough to hurt you badly.
I don't care if you're just "taking a quick look." Unplug it. Every single time.
Table and floor lamps? Pull the plug. Ceiling or wall fixtures that are wired in? There's no plug to pull — switch off the breaker at the panel and confirm it's dead before you touch a wire. That's the whole safety lecture.

AKnow your enemy
Before you buy anything, figure out what you're dealing with. Here's the lineup you'll meet in the wild:

The beautiful part? They almost all replace the exact same way. The switch mechanism differs, but the guts and the wiring are nearly identical. Learn one, you've basically learned them all.

No fancy toolkit. Here's the whole shopping list:

CThe universal method
Nine steps, start to finish — the backbone for nearly every socket you'll meet. Work them in order and the whole job runs about fifteen minutes. I'll flag where specific types differ right afterward.
Cut the power
Table or floor lamp — pull the plug. Wired-in ceiling or wall fixture — flip the breaker and confirm it's dead. Then set the plug (or your eyes on that breaker) where you can watch it the whole time. Yes, this is Step 1 for a reason. I'm serious.
Strip it down — bulb, shade, harp, shell
Take out the bulb, then remove the shade and any glass. If it's a table lamp, lift off the lamp harp too — that's the bowed metal frame the shade clips onto — so nothing's in your way and nothing can break. Now find the word "PRESS" stamped into the metal socket shell near the base; press firmly there with your thumb while rocking the shell upward, and it pops loose and slides off. (Some sockets skip the PRESS shell and hold on with a small set screw instead — just unscrew or loosen it to free the shell.) Underneath is a cardboard insulating sleeve — save it, you'll need it. Slide that off too.

Photograph the wiring before you touch it
With the shell off, you can see the socket screwed onto the two wires at two terminals — one brass/gold, one silver. Take a clear phone photo now. This one habit saves you every time: it's your map back if anything comes loose, and it settles any "wait, which wire went where" the moment it comes up.
While you're looking, learn the rule you'll use in Step 6. Your cord has a smooth half and a ribbed half (little ridges you can feel, sometimes a printed line or text) — that ribbing marks the neutral wire. Ribbed/marked → silver screw (neutral); smooth → brass screw (hot). Getting this right means the switch cuts the hot wire and the outer shell stays neutral — safer to touch when it's on.

Remove the old socket
Loosen both terminal screws and unhook the wires, then lift the whole old socket free (unscrew the cap from the lamp pipe if it's threaded on). Keep it — that's your store reference for buying the exact replacement.
Now prep the freed wire ends. If the copper's corroded, blackened, or frayed, snip it back and strip a fresh 3/4 inch. Twist each set of strands tight so no whiskers stick out, then bend each end into a small J-shaped hook with needle-nose pliers — you'll loop these clockwise so tightening pulls them in.

Mount the new socket
Grab your matching replacement. If it comes apart, thread the wires back through the socket cap first and screw that cap onto the lamp pipe so it's seated firm and square — do this before wiring, or you'll have to undo your connections to fit it. (Forgetting is a rite of passage. You'll do it once.)

Wire it up by polarity
Time to use the rule from Step 3: ribbed/marked wire → silver screw, smooth wire → brass screw. Slip each hook clockwise around its screw so the loop closes as you turn. Seat it fully under the screw head with no bare copper poking past.

Bare copper poking out past the screw, or the hook only half-caught. Loose strands and exposed wire are exactly what cause shorts and arcing.
Tighten the terminals
Snug each screw down firmly — this is the connection your whole repair rides on, so don't leave it finger-tight. Give each wire a gentle tug; it shouldn't budge. A loose terminal is the number-one cause of a flickering or dead lamp down the road.
Reassemble
Slide the cardboard insulating sleeve back over the socket — do not skip this, it's what keeps the live terminals from shorting against the metal shell. Then slip the shell on and press until it clicks into the cap. Refit any shade or glass. You'll hear and feel the shell lock home.

Bulb in, power on, test
Thread in a bulb of the right wattage, restore power, and flip the switch. Let there be light. If it works — congratulations, you just fixed something with your own two hands. If not, cut the power again and jump to troubleshooting below.

DType-specific notes
The universal method covers the bulk of it. Here's where individual types want a little extra:

EStill not working?
Don't panic. Unplug, and run down this checklist:
- Nothing happens at all? Check that your wires make solid contact under the screws. A loose hook is the #1 offender.
- Flickers when you touch the cord? A connection is loose somewhere. Re-tighten both terminals.
- Blew a fuse or tripped a breaker? Likely a short — a stray copper whisker, or the insulating sleeve left out. Open it up and inspect.
- Bulb won't light but the socket seems fine? The little brass tab at the bottom center flattens over time. Unplug, and gently pry it up a few millimeters with a flathead so it presses the bulb again. Works like magic.
Replace the socket, or rewire the whole thing?
If the cord is also brittle, cracked, or cloth-wrapped and fraying — honestly, do both. A socket-and-cord kit runs about ten bucks and comes pre-matched. For anything vintage or valuable, fresh wiring end to end is cheap insurance against a fire. Don't nurse a crumbling cord to save five dollars.
The payoff
The first time you bring a "dead" lamp back to life, something clicks in your brain.
Suddenly that curbside floor lamp isn't trash — it's a fifteen-minute project. That estate-sale brass beauty with the sketchy switch? Yours for cheap, because everyone else thought it was broken.
